New CEO Announcement Press Release
A new CEO press release names the incoming chief executive, states the start date, summarizes their relevant experience and explains what happens to the previous leader. A full sample, a checklist and timing advice are below.
What to include in a new CEO announcement
Leadership releases are read by employees, customers, candidates and competitors. Every one of them is checking the same three things: who is it, when do they start, and what happened to the last person. Answer all three in the first paragraph.
- Full name, exact title and effective start date. "Effective Nov. 1" removes all ambiguity.
- Where they come from and the roles that qualify them — company, division, years of experience, one concrete result.
- The outgoing leader's status: retiring, stepping down, staying as chairman or advisor, or leaving the company. Never leave this blank; silence becomes the story.
- Board or founder quote explaining why this person, in a sentence that could only be about them.
- Incoming CEO quote about priorities for the first 90 days or the year ahead.
- Board process, if it matters: national search, internal promotion, unanimous vote. An internal promotion is itself the news for many readers.
- Company boilerplate with size, locations and founding year.
- One media contact who can answer follow-ups and route interview requests.
Add a headshot and a short bio as a downloadable press kit rather than attaching files. Editors quote the bio, not the release.

Summit HVAC Names Industry Veteran Rachel Kim Chief Executive Officer
DENVER, Colo., Oct. 1, 2026 — Summit HVAC today named Rachel Kim chief executive officer, effective Nov. 1. Kim spent 12 years at Northwind Air, a national heating and cooling manufacturer, most recently as president of its residential service division.
At Northwind, Kim grew the residential service division from 400 to 1,300 technicians and cut average response times from 36 hours to nine. She serves on the board of the Colorado HVAC Apprenticeship Council and holds an MBA from the University of Colorado.
Founder Marcus Hale, who has led Summit HVAC since 2009, will remain chairman of the board and will work with Kim through the first quarter on the company's new commercial service line.
"Rachel has built exactly the kind of service team we want to become," said Hale. "She has run a division ten times our size, and she still answers the phone on a Friday afternoon."
"Summit has 42 technicians and a waitlist of customers who want the same-day guarantee. My first job is hiring enough trained people to keep that promise," said Kim. "Nothing else matters until that is solved."
The board unanimously approved the appointment after a four-month search that included both internal and external candidates. All 68 employees were told before the announcement.

When to send a new CEO announcement
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 2–3 weeks before | Draft the release, headshot and bio. Get board and legal sign-off on the wording, including the predecessor's status. |
| 1 week before | Prepare the internal announcement, employee FAQ and manager talking points. |
| Day before, end of day | Tell employees. Tell major customers and partners individually if they are material. |
| Day of, morning | Send the press release, post it to your newsroom and update the leadership page on your website. |
| Day of, afternoon | Answer inbound press calls with the named contact. Route interview requests, do not forward them. |
Avoid announcing on a Friday afternoon unless you want the minimum possible coverage. Tuesday to Thursday mornings are the strongest days for business press.
Internal first, always
The single most common mistake in a CEO announcement is employees reading it in the news. Two rules prevent it:
- Employees hear it before reporters. Send the internal note the day before, and let managers tell their teams in person where possible.
- Employees get the same facts. The internal note should contain the name, start date and predecessor's status in its first two lines, so nobody is working from a rumor.
If the change involves a departure or a difficult transition, add a short Q&A and a named person employees can ask. See also the new CEO announcement template for a copyable version, and the other press release samples for different announcement types.

How long should a new CEO press release be?
400–600 words. Long enough for both quotes and the outgoing leader's status, short enough that an editor can pull a paragraph and a headline.
Should we name the salary or the reason for the change?
Salary is not news unless the person is public-sector or the figure is disclosed anyway. Reasons can stay general for retirement or planned succession, but a sudden departure needs a truthful line, even if it is "the board and Mr. Hale agreed it was time for new leadership."
What if the new CEO starts months later?
Announce once, with the effective date stated clearly. Send a second, short release on the start date only if something concrete happens, such as a new strategy or hire.
Do we need a separate internal memo?
Yes. It should be shorter than the press release, written in plain language, and sent first. Use our executive appointment template for the wording.
